How does Dutch mental health care contribute to the reduction of psychiatric disorders in society?

On the one hand, of course, there is the patient supply. This includes confused people and people with other kinds of mental complaints. On the other hand, there is the healthcare supply. These are independent companies in mental health care or one of the large clusters of care provision. As an association of about 100 institutions with more than 89 thousand professionals, Dutch mental health care (GGZ) represents more than 90 percent of the sector. The Dutch GGZ has a LinkedIn group. I am a member of this group. The LinkedIn group is involved in influencing policy. In addition, I recently became a member of the LinkedIn group of MINDypsilon. This organization stands up for the interests of psychiatric patients. I am an experience expert with over 14 years of experience as a psychiatric client. I prefer to call myself a client rather than a patient, because that makes me feel more empowered.

I have been through a lot during those 14 years. I clashed with the GGZ on many occasions. Most GGZ employees structurally and systematically exploit the misery of patients treated under the WvGGZ Act. The WvGGZ is a Dutch act on mental health care. They have a thin layer of chrome around a package of scrap. In this they are no different from most people. It is thanks to qualities that are not associated with these employees that patients can improve after a certain treatment period. The question is whether this is always the result of the administration of medication. People often tend towards balance. A good employee looks at the causes that hinder this going back to a situation of balance and knows how to intervene in a controlled way. It is also important that employees recognize ingrained opinions in themselves about what recovery is possible and to what extent medication is necessary or can be an impediment to recovery. Since I became aware of a significant impediment in me, I started to adopt a proactive attitude, which heralded a departure from the daily norm. The GGZ did not recognize the correctness of my actions and tried to curtail my urge for freedom by imposing restrictions on me. But I’m still alive and just going on. The GGZ works together with the judiciary to curtail people’s freedom, rightly or wrongly through the WvGGZ. The judges fail to see what their significant impediment is. Many are also not open to investigating this. But for justice to be right, something has to be done. This is not an incitement by the way. I underwent the court decisions nicely, and have come out stronger despite the hatred of some people. That can also be seen as a triumph of law, for judges who feel like that.

> The GGZ influencing the policy of Dutch mental health care through the media is also one big exploitation of the misery of the people it says it wants to help. That is a visible abomination. Let’s hope that changes.
